AWAY WITH THE FAIRIESI'm not taking emails, faxes, phone calls, text messages, voice messages, instant messages, carrier pigeons, telegraphs, telegrams, notes, comments, or snail mail at the moment. I am a busy bee at work and I am actually doing my university assignments. Go me.
Little Travellers are little beaded dolls made by women who either have HIV/AIDS or are looking after children and other family members who have been affected by HIV/AIDS. For many of these women, this is their sole source of income. Each one is unique and has it's own personality. Each Little Traveller comes with it's own passport so if you send it around the world, a record can be made of all the places it has been to. My own Little Travellers have travelled from South Africa to Canada, the United States, England, France, Brazil and Australia.

The Little Travellers Project is based in Hillcrest, South Africa.
"The Little Travellers HIV/AIDS project is totally inspired. I endorse it every stitch of the way. It raises consciousness in Canada and hope in Africa. In my minds eye, I can just see the women of Hillcrest (a project the Stephen Lewis Foundation strongly supports) beading, and spectacularly artful "Little Travellers" emerging. Then the sales are made in Canada, and money flows to the heroic women and children and families battling the pandemic on the ground. What could be a better act of human solidarity? Buy one, buy two, buy dozens. They speak to the best of the human spirit."

Commando Courageous by R.W. Schikkerling.
"A lad of about thirteen, mounted on a donkey and carrying a Martini rifle, passes us, and in reply to my enquiries, he states laconically: My naam is Jooste. Ik gaan Engelse skiet. (My name is Jooste. I am going to shoot Englishmen).
In the early part of the war, the enemy was spoken of even more lightly. One wife writing to her husband said:
Remain and do your duty. I do not wish to see you until the English have been driven thirty miles into the blue plains (the sea). I can always find another husband, but not another Transvaal.
P.S. Do not forget to bring a rifle for little Jan and a tame Englishman for the kitchen.
An entertaining and informative first hand account of what it was like to be a Boer guerilla fighter during the Second Anglo Boer War. A quick Google search will reveal how widely quoted this book is as a reference source on a variety of topics and confirm its stature as a Classic of its kind. A must-read for any student of South African or military history.
First published in ink and paper form in 1964, and based on the authors notes and diary entries made in the field, Commando Courageous has an appeal that effortlessly bridges the hundred-odd years that separate the modern-day reader and the events it recounts.
